Dear Beliefnet Reader,

Seventeen years ago I was in NYC with some family members and we took the ferry over to the Statue of Liberty. I remember looking back in awe at the skyline and thinking how massive and powerful it was, especially with the Twin Towers standing guard of the city.

Just a few weeks ago, I was on that same ferry. As we pulled away into the harbor, I looked back at the skyline and felt a knot in my stomach and an ache in my heart for all that we lost on September 11, 2001.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 10 years since that tragic day. Even though we lost so much when the Towers fell, we as Americans never lost our hope—our hope for a better tomorrow and stronger nation.

In honor of those whose lives were lost and their families, the rescue workers who fought so hard to save others, and the survivors, we at Beliefnet have created a special memorial: Fallen Towers, Rising Hope. Click here.

9/11 TV 10 Year Anniversary Specials

Tonight begins the first of more than 40 TV specials marking the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 — the biggest outpouring of work on a single event anyone can remember.

The Steven Spielberg-executive produced “Rising: Rebuilding Ground Zero” — six hours in all — for Discovery (8 p.m.) may be the most-ambitious of the specials. But it will not be the most emotional.

CBS’ updated “9/11: Ten Years Later” (Sept. 11, 8 p.m.) is expected to be a standout, in part because of what it has — footage of the first plane crashing into Tower One of the World Trade Center.

Nearly a decade after “9/11” originally aired, the Emmy-winning documentary, narrated by Robert De Niro, remains “one of the most important historic records of the tragedy and heroism of that day,” CBS producer Susan Zirinsky says.

The story of Engine 7 Ladder 1 in TriBeCa, in the shadow of the Trade Center, was the most-watched 9/11 documentary of its time.

And because of that, Zirinsky and her team wanted to maintain the integrity of the original footage. Still, they did update it by revisiting the 14 firefighters from the original documentary to see what’s happened to them, and to get their take on the events of the intervening decade.

“Our focus is on this one firehouse, but what it becomes is a snapshot of 9/11,” she says.

Mushnick: Will 9/11 Special Tip-Toe Around the Obvious?

By PHIL MUSHNICK, The New York Post, August 14, 2011

I’ve written this before, but now’s the time to hear for yourselves.

With the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks approaching, the news media, as well they should, will be all over this story.

But listen. The perpetrators of the slaughter will be treated with perverse respect, and simple, plain truth-telling will be avoided — just in case anyone out there is inclined to claim that the reporters and their networks are anti-Islam.

Listen for how the innocent dead are addressed. We will hear that they “died,” that they “perished,” that they were “lost” and that they were “killed” on 9/11. We will hear that they were victims of a tragedy, a cataclysmic horror.

But one fact will go largely unspoken. We will not hear that they were murdered.

How often have you heard that indisputable truth spoken on newscasts since 9/11? How often have you heard that the 2,977 innocents who died on 9/11 were “victims of a mass murder”?

And it’s unlikely that you’ll hear that much in the 9/11 remembrances, overviews and personal profiles that TV will present, day and night, over the next month.

Although the 9/11 murderers were driven by their radicalized, insane interpretation of their religion, the Western news media applies an inherent sensitivity toward Islamic extremists in their careful refusal to deal with and report the plainest, clearest — and ugliest — of facts.

Bush to be in New York City for 10th Anniversary of 9/11

Posted on July 30, 2011 by Conservative Byte

The ceremony at the World Trade Center site marking the 10th anniversary of the 9-11 terror attacks will be a solemn but stately event. It will include an appearance by former President George W. Bush, and a chance for victims’ families to view the names of loved ones etched into the memorial, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

Bloomberg and President Barack Obama will be joined by leaders who were in charge during the 2001 attacks, including Bush, former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and former New York Gov. George Pataki. Current New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will also be there, he said.

Speaking Friday on his weekly radio show on WOR-AM, Bloomberg said the lawmakers will read short poems or quotes. No speeches will be made.

“This cannot be political,” he said. “So that’s why there’s a poem or a quote or something that each of the readers will read. No speeches whatsoever. That’s not an appropriate thing.”

The mayor also revealed a few more details of the Sunday, Sept. 11 ceremony. It will be held on the highway to the west of the site, and only relatives will be allowed inside the memorial to look for the names of their loved ones, etched into the railings at two huge waterfalls built in the footprint of the World Trade Center. The falls descend from the street level down into a void.

The names of the nearly 3,000 victims — including those who died at the Pentagon and aboard United Flight 93 that went down in Shanksville, Pa. — will be read aloud for the first time.

The public will be allowed into the space, still a major construction site, the day after the ceremony but only with tickets. Bloomberg said limiting the number of people is a safety precaution as the work continues on 1 World Trade Center, the PATH station and the museum.

He said there have been hundreds of thousands of reservations already, and a few days are already booked solid. He estimated that 1 million people annually will visit the site.

The museum is still under construction and is scheduled to open next year. Artifacts from the terrorist attacks are slowly being assembled for the space, including a cross-shaped steel T-beam which was discovered by a construction worker in the smoldering rubble. A national atheist group sued over the inclusion of the cross in the museum. It says all beliefs should be included, or none at all.

Bloomberg said on his radio show that the group had a right to sue, but organizers had a right to place the cross there.

“This clearly influenced people,” he said. “It gave them strength. In a museum you want to show things that impacted people’s behavior back then, even if you don’t think it was right. It’s history. Museums are for history.”

Bloomberg said other religious relics would be in the museum: a Star of David cut from World Trade Center steel, a Bible found during the recovery effort and a Jewish prayer

Take Action as New York City Mayor bans prayer but not politics for 9-11 Memorial

Ten years ago, in the wake of the worst terrorist attack in our nation’s history, Americans turned to God for solace. Members of the clergy on the scene and across the nation gave aid, comfort, and hope to the shocked, the fearful, and the bereaved. As the tenth anniversary of that day approaches, we would do well to turn our eyes again toward our Protector.

Unfortunately, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg would have us look the other way.

At a Ground Zero commemoration for the families of victims, Mayor Bloomberg is allowing the presence of politicians and presidents, but no pastors or prayer. The mayor of course will be there, but politicians weren’t then — and are not now — nearly enough.

Please sign our petition to Mayor Bloomberg asking that he give pastors and prayer a place at this most solemn remembrance of such a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. As we deliver the petition to the mayor’s office, pray with me that he’ll see that this nation needs prayer more than politics.

CultureBloomberg Bans Clergy From 9/11 Ceremony but Ground Zero Mosque OK

NYC Mayor Bloomber Bans Clergy from 9-11 Ceremony

So says Fox Nation, based on reporting by the Wall Street Journal.

Religious leaders are calling on Mayor Michael Bloomberg to reverse course and offer clergy a role in the ceremony commemorating the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

Rudy Washington, a deputy mayor in former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s administration, said he’s outraged. Mr. Washington organized an interfaith ceremony at Yankee Stadium shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

“This is America, and to have a memorial service where there’s no prayer, this appears to be insanity to me,” said Mr. Washington, who has suffered severe medical problems connected to the time he spent at Ground Zero.

Fox Nation pairs that story with this flashback, in which Bloomberg goes to bat for the Ground Zero Mosque on religious freedom grounds.

What if the majority of New Yorkers, or the majority of Americans, want clergy at the 9-11 ceremonies? If asked, I suspect that they do.

The announcement drew particular outrage from Rudy Washington, who served as deputy mayor under former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and organized an interfaith service at Yankee Stadium in the wake of the attacks.

“This is America, and to have a memorial service where there’s no prayer, this appear to be insanity to me,” Washington told the Wall Street Journal. “I feel like America has lost its way.”

New York City Councilman Fernando Cabrera, a pastor at a Bronx church, said he was similarly shocked and disappointed that clergy would be excluded, feeling like it was “wiping out the recognition of the importance that spirituality plays on that day.”

Of course it makes it even more of an outrage when you consider Bloomberg was a vocal supporter of the so-called “Ground Zero mosque“.

More 9/11 Outrage: NYC Mayor Bans Religious Services at Ground Zero Anniversary Memorial

Posted on August 24, 2011 by Jane Jamison|

We will never forget and ………….we will never forget how shabbily the heroes are being treated

It just keeps getting more insulting and outrageous to America, to the fallen, and to the heroes of 9/11. America is being hijacked again, on the tenth anniversary of this attack.

To review:

The President of the United States recently delivered a treasonous tribute to the “Muslim victims” of 9/11 during a glittering gala dinner at the White House. The approval of an Islamic “victory mosque” at Ground Zero is a huge middle finger to America. The 9/11 memorial at the former World Trade Center is a very weird, Third World-ish, freakshow “tribute”to the victims. Atheists have tried to have a cross of twisted metal removed from the memorial.

Former FDNY firefighter Sean Hickey told that he and other first responders are dismayed that they are not invited to the 9/11/11 ceremony at Ground Zero, they will have their “own” event later.

Sean also says cops, firefighters and construction workers who have contracted illnesses due to their exposure to hazardous chemicals, fumes and dust at Ground Zero must now be background-checked before they receive their settlement payments, to make sure they are not terrorists.

And now this:

New York City’s Muslim-appeasing mayor Michael Bloomberg has ordered that there will be no religious services at the 9/11 10 year commemoration. No clergy are invited.

But, the mayor says, there ABSOLUTELY damn WILL be a victory” mosque built on the spot where 3000 Americans died at the hands of Muslims.

NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg — What a horrible man

Bloomberg Defends Ground Zero Mosque as Freedom-of-Faith Issue

In his fiercest defense yet of the mosque proposed near Ground Zero, Mayor Bloomberg declared yesterday that it must be allowed to proceed because the government “shouldn’t be in the business of picking” one religion over another.

“I think it’s fair to say if somebody was going to try, on that piece of property, to build a church or a synagogue, nobody would be yelling and screaming,” the mayor said.

“And the fact of the matter is that Muslims have a right to do it, too.”

News from The Hill:

Ten years later, lawmakers, staff recall shock, confusion, fear
By Jordy Yager

To mark the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, The Hill spent weeks talking to members who were in Washington and New York on that day to record their memories. It was a day filled with confusion, gut-wrenching angst, and a call to action. Rep. Pete King’s (R-N.Y.) first thought was that his wife might have been on one of the hijacked planes. Former Rep. Brian Baird (D-Wash.) ran the halls of the Longworth House Office Building, telling his neighbors to flee after he saw the Pentagon erupt in a fireball from his window.

Are We Safer Today?

Al-Qa’ida may be down, but Islamo-Fascism 2.0 is thriving

“A universal peace … is in the catalogue of events, which will never exist but in the imaginations of visionary philosophers, or in the breasts of benevolent enthusiasts.” –James Madison

I’ll Take It From Here

This Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the 11 September 2001 attack on our nation by a terrorist cell of Islamic fascists. (If you were young and do not have a crystal-clear memory of that event, I suggest you link to our 9/11 retrospective page.)

It was a modern “date which will live in infamy” as Franklin Roosevelt said in regard to the attack on Pearl Harbor 60 years earlier. The two most significant similarities between Pearl and 9/11 are that we were wholly unprepared for both, and a like number of Americans were murdered.

After eight years of national security malfeasance under Bill Clinton’s administration, and eight months of the newly installed George W. Bush administration’s efforts to reorder national security priorities, only a handful of Americans were convinced that a deadly enemy had coalesced in our midst. Indeed, a well-organized terrorist cell had settled into American suburbs in the last years of Clinton’s watch.

However, before noon on 9/11, it was tragically clear to all Americans that our vital national interests — both the security of our homeland and the stability of our allies abroad — were under assault. An enemy had declared war on the United States, and it was an asymmetric enemy better organized and more lethal than ever before.

Why were we so blatantly unprepared?

In 2001, the U.S military had been severely downsized with the Justice Department and CIA operating under very restrictive Clinton budgets and mandates. Clinton’s final national security policy directive (in December 2000) did not mention “al-Qa’ida” once in its 45,000-word text, and mentioned “Osama bin Laden” only four times. The directive remains a self-incriminating document that lays bare the Clinton administration’s “strategy” of swatting flies — of lobbing the occasional cruise missile at a nearly empty building (excepting for poor janitors) and of treating terrorists as mere “fugitives” who should be extradited to “answer for their crimes.”

Michael Scheuer, former CIA chief of the team responsible for hunting Sheik Osama bin Laden, confirmed with great disdain that SpecOps had not one but two opportunities to kill OBL before 9/11. With bin Laden literally in their sights, however, Clinton pulled the plug on both operations.

Are terrorist combatants or just criminals? Post your opinion

Fortunately, President George W. Bush was decisive both in identifying our enemy and in responding. “This nation is at war with Islamic fascists who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom, to hurt our nation,” the president said, in preparation for launching the Global War on Islamic Terrorism.

Global indeed. The Patriot Post coined the term “Jihadistan” to refer to the borderless nation of Islamic extremists that constitutes al-Qa’ida and other Muslim terrorist groups around the world.

Within days of 9/11, Bush specifically identified OBL and his Taliban support network as the perpetrators of the attack, and within three weeks, Operation Enduring Freedom – Afghanistan was underway. OEF-A was followed by OEF campaigns to capture or kill members of al-Qa’ida and other Islamic terrorist groups around the world, including operations in the Philippines, Horn of Africa, Pankisi Gorge, Trans-Sahara regions, Kyrgyzstan, the Caribbean and Central America.

Thus, the advent of Fourth Generation Warfare in the Second Nuclear Age.

Seventeen months and 17 toothless United Nations resolutions later, George Bush finally launched Operation Iraqi Freedom.

On 9/12, there had been grave doubts about whether our nation could prevent another catastrophic attack in the days and weeks ahead — much less whether the Bush administration could keep the homeland free from major attack for the remaining seven-plus years of Bush’s presidency. There were also questions about whether OEF and OIF would be sufficient to contain Jihadi elements.

As noted in The Patriot Post‘s five-part National Security Primer, our objective has been to keep the battle on our enemy’s turf, and keep them off of ours. That was the central theme of the Bush Preemption Doctrine behind OEF and OIF.

Make no mistake: It is not for a lack of Islamo-Fascist will that we have avoided another massive attack; indeed, individual jihadists have, during the first 30 months of the Obama administration, launched a failed Christmas Day airline bombing and a failed Times Square bombing, as well as a successfully murderous assault on Fort Hood. Despite this — and as affirmed by classified cable traffic regarding interdiction operations — our Armed Forces, law enforcement and intelligence agencies have established an effective, though certainly not impenetrable, gauntlet against such an attack. We have dodged many bullets over the last decade.

Predictably, the most significant obstacles to our national security during the Bush years came in the form of opposition from bed-wetting pantywaists on the Left. Our enemies have been greatly emboldened by Leftist traitors in Congress and their efforts to undermine President Bush’s re-election prospects by politicizing questions about the Iraqi WMD threat while thousands of American combat personnel were in harm’s way.

Has Obama emboldened the Jihad Movement? Comment

Second only to the Left’s aiding and abetting the enemy is that of their Leftmedia sycophants.

Recall if you will these words, first reported by The Patriot Post: “I say to you: that we are in a battle, and that more than half of this battle is taking place in the battlefield of the media.” That quote is part of an intercepted and authenticated communiqué from Osama bin Laden’s chief lieutenant, Sheikh Ayman Muhammad al-Zawahiri, to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, before the murderous Zarqawi’s termination in June 2006.

A typical example of these enemy sympathizers in the MSM would be the Newsweek magazine cover story proclaiming “We’re losing.” On page three of that 2006 edition, Newsweek’s subtext read: “Winning is no longer a question; it’s about avoiding total defeat.” The next page offered a teaser from the magazine’s former editor, Jon Meacham, in which he asserted, “To say that America is losing in Iraq … is not unpatriotic. Far from it.”

On the infotainment front emerged media sensations like Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 and its long list of deceits.

At the end of George Bush’s tenure as president, the greatest threat to U.S. national security emerged, a threat from both the enemies domestic and enemies foreign. That threat is in the person of an Islamic sympathizer, Barack Hussein Obama.

Since 9/11, though Western nations have avoided catastrophic attacks, we have certainly not avoided tactical assaults. There have been bloody Islamist assaults against civilians in Moscow, Bali, Spain and the UK. In the U.S., we foiled planned attacks against targets such as Fort Dix and the Manhattan subway, and we were lucky for the incompetence of the aforementioned Christmas Day “underwear” bomber and Times Square car bomber.

The most significant Jihadi assault against the U.S. occurred on 5 November 2009, when Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a U.S. Army psychiatrist, yelled “Allahu Akbar!” as he opened fire, murdering 14 and wounding 29 others at Fort Hood, Texas. That an out-and-out jihadist such as Hassan was allowed in uniform is a testament to political correctness run amok, and to the abject failure of “diversity” policies, especially in our military.

Obama’s favored military commanders are more interested in packing the ranks with homosexuals and scrubbing curriculums of any reference to Christianitythan focusing on warfighting.

After years of slugging it out with jihadists in Iraq, August of 2011 became the first month since OIF’s opening salvo that not a single American combat fatality was recorded there. However, last month in Afghanistan, in the wake of Barack Obama’s announcement of his planned withdrawal, we recorded the highest number of combat fatalities there since the launch of OEF-A.

The killing of Osama bin Laden in May, and the subsequent termination of the latest of OBL’s chief lieutenants to pop up, Atiyah al-Rahman, has created something of a false sense of security.

But the media tribulations proclaiming we have not been attacked in the 10 years since 9/11 should be tempered by the words of Mark Twain: “Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” Al-Qa’ida may be down, but Islamo-Fascism 2.0 is thriving. The threat of a catastrophic WMD attack on our nation remains very real, as does the threat of local and regional disruptive tactical terrorist assaults. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta may be accurate in his claim “that we have put al-Qa’ida on the path to defeat,” but Islamo-Fascism is alive and well.

For an example of our current complacency, look no further than our continued porous southern border, or consider our Transportation Security Administration, which performs body searches on grandmothers and infants rather than conducting terrorist profiling.

We are in a Long War against a formidable enemy, yet our national security continues to be undermined by competing political agendas. Weak-kneed politicians continue to placate Islamists, even seriously considering the use of our tax dollars to build a mosque just two blocks from the 9/11 memorial.

Setting politics aside, it’s instructive to note that terrorist threat vectors against the U.S. have two components: intention and operational capability. To that end, a colleague who is a senior ground ops command officer in Afghanistan sent me his opinion from enemy territory this morning: “Jihadi extremism is a virus, or maybe a genetic mutation. I’m not optimistic that we’ll see it checked in our lifetimes. The odds of anyone pulling off another 9/11 are pretty slim, but they’ll find something equally shocking to do soon enough. The path Pakistan is on should give us all pause. Jihadis have the will and I think it’s a matter of when, not if, they will obtain the means (WMD). And they are determined to use it.”

So are we safer today? Yes.

Are we safe today? No!

We must take concrete steps to overcome the bureaucratic impediments to effective national security, not the least of which is gutting the bloated Department of Homeland Security. Moreover, we need to remain vigilant as citizens — and maintain a reasonable level of knowledge and individual preparedness in order to respond and recover from the next catastrophic attack — and there is one in the plans just over the horizon.

Are we safer now? Tell me what you think

911lightsTeaching 9/11

Across the metropolitan area, teachers are using the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to convey the lessons of an event that stirs strong emotions and holds grave significance for adults but for which their students have little — if any — memory.

Some schools have special events planned, such as an assembly or a moment of silence. Others are delving into a curriculum that victims’ family members helped create. They talk about violence — but also about respect, tolerance and how to inspire change in the world.

“It’s a tricky topic,” said Kelly Goldberg, a Bannockburn middle school teacher. “We need to walk a fine line between overwhelming them with the negative, but we can’t sugarcoat it either. These are our future grown-ups.”

Teaching about 9/11 is not mandated in Illinois public schools, but genocide education is required. What happened at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania on that brilliant Tuesday morning can be woven into other tragic global events — Darfur, Cambodia, the Holocaust — and can just as easily pop up in a religion or media class as in history, teachers say.

Federal Funds For Ground Zero Mosque?

What do you think would happen if a Christian organization received $5 million dollars to build a church in downtown Manhattan?

What about a Jewish synogouge?

Or a Mormon temple?

If our government gave funds to any of these places of worship the liberals would take to the streets! Can you imagine the mayhem?

But, somehow it’s okay to provide government funding to a mosque on Ground Zero…
Are you angry yet?

The mosque, known as Park 51, has requested a grant for $5 MILLION DOLLARS of FEDERAL MONEY. According to Dick Morris, “[The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation]… set up to rebuild lower Manhattan after 9-11 is activeley considering the grant request.”

The Cross and the Towers (DVD)

September 11, 2001 – A day that will never be forgotten. A day when ordinary men and women would face the unbelievable, and experience what few ever dreamed or thought possible: A terrorist attack in the heart of New York claiming nearly three thousand lives and leaving a scene of incomprehensible destruction.

As rescue and recovery began, a select group of men and women would be forced to endure their worst nightmare: living and working within ground zero. Day after day they worked to restore the broken city. As weeks turned into months a feeling of desperation and despair overwhelmed the hearts and minds of these people.

Yet in the midst of the devastation, an amazing discovery would bring hope when it was needed most. Some called it a mere phenomenon, others saw it as miraculous. The media noted its appearance. Newspaper and television reporters sought to see it for themselves.

Follow the lives of seven individuals whose lives were changed forever, not only by the horrific day of September 11, but by the stunning symbol of hope they found buried beneath the rubble of ground zero. Witness through first hand accounts this stunning story of hope, a story few Americans have heard.
