Ny: gerrymandering and the need for redistricting reform; and some of the worst ethics

July 11, 2010

On something we can agree, as mind you, we do not agree with this group on several issues.

Redistricting Reform
The New York State Legislature is infamous for drawing gerrymandered district lines in such comical shapes as “Abraham Lincoln Riding a Vacuum Cleaner” and “Bug Splattered on a Windshield.” NYPIRG is pushing for creation of an independent redistricting commission, ensuring that legislative districts are drawn to best represent New Yorkers, rather than improve a legislator’s shot at reelection.”

Democratic Redistricting Will Send GOP To “Oblivion,” Smith Says

At the Democratic Rural Conference, Crowne Plaza in Niagara Falls, Senate President Pro Tem Malcolm Smith made a promise about what would happen if the Democrats retain their Senate majority which awoke the speech-drowned partisan crowd.

“With the Democrats in control of the State Senate, we are going to draw the lines so that Republicans will be in oblivion in the state of New York for the next 20 years.”

Smith said after his speech, sticking by his prediction that the party would retain control in the fall and use that to build an even bluer state once the census results arrive. He added that the Democrats are responsible enough to redistrict appropriately.

New districts would likely be in place by the time of the 2012 elections.

Their are those however like Ed Koch and his compatriots in New York Uprising or potential lieutenant governor candidate Bill Samuels who say that the lack of independent redistricting is at the root of Albany dysfunction, Smith of course says they are wrong.

Also, one more area among way too many that Ny State ranks in the worst!

State-by-state Comparison Shows New York Has One Of the Nation’s Weakest Ethics Laws

Speaking of ethics, Malcolm Smith is currently under state and federal investigation.
